Week 5: A Radical Challenge

The final chapter of Keep The Change is a re-cap of all we've been challenged to do so far:

Live the life you desire and tell others the truth about it.

Find a purpose in your pain and make a difference in others' lives.

Go after your goals with the full knowledge of your personality strengths.

Jealously guard what goes into your mind (and who influences your life).

Define a strategy for lasting change--and keep it with the help of accountability partners.

Capture your daily reality through journaling.

Always look at life through the lens (or perspective) of love!

And never, never give up!

I'm proud of you all! Watch for the next online group in 2009!

Be encouraged,

Becky

Week 4: Capture Daily Reality

It is NO secret that I'm a firm believer in journaling--whether you are using the 4-page a day Change Your Life Daily Journal or the My Partner Prayer Notebook--every written word contains more accountability than a good intention!

This week--even with the holiday--I want to ask you to plan (one day in advance) for time to journal. Record your weight or eating goals--even log your food intake and workout schedule. List your "to do's" and check them off. Rewrite your prayer request list.

For the next 7 days, keep a journal--faithfully. Read pages 131-152 in Keep The Change to "fan the flame" for this powerful, daily discipline. Journaling WILL change your life, if you let it!

Be encouraged,

Becky

KTC Week III: Tame Your Temperament

Taming Your Temperament is not just a good idea—I am convinced that it is essential to having successful relationships with family, co-workers, and friends. So we're going to tackle it together!

Your reading assignment this week: pages 49-77 and fill in the blanks at the end of the chapter.

Your first writing assignment, yes—writing—is to retake the Personality Test, if you haven’t taken it recently, (in the back of the book) AND ask those closest to you to take it, as well. It is SO important to realize WHY you and others respond/react differently to certain things; it allows you to have greater compassion, understanding, patience, and empathy.

For your second writing assignment, I would like you to choose one of your personality weaknesses and write 3 paragraphs about the most recent time you exhibited this trait (I’ll explain in greater detail during the phone call). Paragraph 1: Explain the situation and your reaction. Paragraph 2: How/if it negatively impacted those involved. Paragraph 3: How you believe you could improve on your response (react differently) and more positively impact others.

I am pushing you here—but I believe that this exercise can and will produce change that lasts!

Be encouraged,

Becky

Week 2: Harness Your Pain

Maybe it is the fact that I've been "on the road" so much this fall, or that I've been praying with dozens of college students in the past month, or that my coaching clients have increased lately, but this week, I feel it would be a great benefit to even the most healthy person to tackle the questions in Chapter 2 on pages 44-47.

Everyone who wants to change their lives seems to resist (1) getting involved in a support group, or (2) seeing a counselor, ex: for marriage improvement, or (3) to journal daily.

This week I would like to challenge each of us to identify the pain in our past through this exercise, with the intention of finding ourselves less embarrassed or secretive or ashamed about it. Moving forward is, in part, letting God heal us AND use our stories to help and heal others. (II Corinthians 5:17-20).

Please stay committed to our blogspot assignments, as well as your daily Bible reading!

Be encouraged,

Becky

Week 1: Change is Sustained with Accountability

As we begin this series, some of us are ALREADY making progress in areas in which we want to change. Our first assignment was to take the Self-Test and to talk it over/through with someone who could help us honestly assess our lives NOW so that we can make specific corrections to our lives that will result in change.

So often as adults, we forget how important follow-up, follow-through, accountability, and assessment is to ACTUAL improvement! I'm excited that you and I are "in this" together. In fact, in this week's CYL enewsletter, I quote a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, "if your closest friends gain weight, your chance of doing the same could increase 57%." Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, the study's lead researcher said, "To maintain a healthy lifestyle, it's important to associate with people who have similar goals."

If you know me and my balanced life philosophy, then you know that THIS step is usually the LAST step in a series. I've determined to make it the FIRST step in order for each of us to grab onto a sojourner, a friend, a companion, a co-worker, or family member and CHANGE with someone who is not going to undermine our progress or be "soft" on us.

This week, as you journal on all 4 pages daily, read the daily bible, record your eating and exercise goals and progress, I want you to go over your self-test with someone (it takes at least 30 minutes) and discuss each question. Ask for their suggestions, ask them to pray with you over your weaknesses, and to meet with you again at the end of our series.

So often, the ball drops with an assignment--and I'm coming to find that the later in the series, the more "dropped balls," so I'm starting at the end! Choose a person this week, post their initials and start this series with a commitment to change your life with accountability.

Be encouraged,

Becky

Welcome "Changers!"

Check back on November 1st for your first assignment--it will include journaling and reading from our text, "Keep The Change." Our first of five phone calls (weekly motivational/inspirational pep-talks) will begin on Wednesday, November 5 at noon PST. You will be sent a reminder about each call a few days before the call. Set your ringers!

Remember, if you can't make the "live" call, you will be given different phone numbers (on this blogspot) each Wednesday afternoon to call-in for the recorded call before the following Wednesday.

As soon as you receive your materials, please fill in the self-test and take the personality test found in your book!

Be encouraged,

Becky
